Limoges Enamels by M. Gauthier & M. Marcheix
The art of ornamenting objects with enamel is of great antiquity. The ancient Egyptians and Assyrians practised it to superb effect, and we have the evidence for this in such examples as the enamelled walls of the palace of Rameses 111 and the palace of Nimrod in Babylon, In Europe the importance of enamelling dates from the Middle Ages.
The name of Limoges is associated with one of the peak periods in the history of the enameller's art in Europe. It was at Limoges in France that the new method of
'painted' enamel was perfected, during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries,
and its results stand high among the glories of minor Renaissance art.
