Masterpieces from the Robert von Hirsch sale at Sotheby's
The von Hirsch sale was undoubtedly the most important art auction, both in terms of quality and quantity, to be held for many decades. It created a world-wide interest and an unparalleled demand for its catalogues. This prompted Sotheby's to produce the present volume which illustrates a selection of the masterpieces from the collection together with the full catalogue descriptions, the prices and some eighty color plates. The book starts with a brief Introduction about Baron Robert von Hirsch and the formation of the collection and an article by Sir John Pope-Hennessy on the Branchini Madonna by Giovanni di Paolo.
